Regatta well attended

A total of 63 sailboats were entered.  Two separate race courses were set, one for optimist dinghies and one for the rest of the fleets.  Winds were strong on Saturday and a total of three races were sailed.  Sunday had moderate winds and a total of 5 races were sailed.  Our largest event for the season had a good complement of club volunteers to help host this event, a part of the Alberta Series of six events.  A lot of before the event club preparation was accomplished with a number of work parties scheduled from the beginning of the season.  Results are posted on the Regattas page.  Thanks goes out to our sponsors of this event including Philpott Honey, Brooks Water Pure and Simple, Sleemans Brewery, Mat O'Toole for the wine, and others.  The club member's swap sale was considered a success with many items being sold or swapped.  The club grounds were also used for tent camping and there was very little space left.  One item that has become apparent is the need to develop our shore line to harden it up to prevent wave action erosion and a way to prevent flooding of the grounds.  It will be an urgent project and needs to be corrected soon.  Other considerations for the shore line project would be to maintain ease of launching and retrieving sailboats.

There were nine Newell Sailing Club members sailing in the regatta, 6 in the Seaspray class and three in the Laser class.
