Club Winter Prep Finished and AGM Minutes

posted Oct 26, 2014, 5:18 AM by Web Master   [ updated Oct 26, 2014, 5:27 AM ]
Our final social, work party and AGM on Oct 19th had an eager group of people accomplishing a lot of things.  The rough ground in the north club grounds has been harrowed, rock picked and seeded.  Hopefully next year will have this area useable.  Water tanks drained, screens removed, buildings cleaned and grounds keeping finished.  Our AGM was finished and we are ready to start a new year.  Thanks to all who attended.

Newell Sailing Club AGM

Fall Clean Up

October 19 2014

Members attending; Dave Mills, John, Janet and Tristan Cormack, Mike and Susan Sonnie,  Bette and Larry Van Pypen, Paul Cooper, Richard Braul, Don and Sharon Snell,Roger Bouchard, David,Marion, Sandy and Margret Jane Malcolm.

Dave Mills called the meeting to order.
Larry read the minutes from the 2013 AGM, Motion to accept and seconded.

Director reports:
John presented and went over the treasurer report. **(Attach report)
Discussion; There is still $4000 for the Junior Sailing Program. The fence has been put up by the Park and painted, At present there is no cost to the club. The new stove and fridge has been installed and we have a new Laptop and printer. These purchases came in under budget.
Most of the sailboards have been sold as well as the Sawyer Sailboat and 2 Optis.
Our major expense is still insurance.. Reducing our boat inventory should help reduce this somewhat, though we need to add coverage for our additional buildings. Motion to accept and seconded.

Dave presented the rental report. There were less rentals this past year ( all 1 day rentals) **(attach report)
Tilley and Brooks Junior High used the club facilities as well. ASA supplied some coaching for these 2 school events.
As per the Club lease we are required to do some facility rentals each year.
Discussion; The rental sign by the Club entrance is leading people to ask about boat rentals. We should change the sign to reflect that the rentals are for the Clubhouse and grounds.
Motion to accept and seconded.

Other Activities Report for 2014.
There were 4 Windsurfer Clinics held with good attendance for the first 3. Slightly less in attendance for the 4th. Don is willing to lead these again in 2015. It was suggested that the club hold a catamaran clinic as well.
High Level Canoe and Kayak ran a successful Kayak day clinic for 24 participants. People were interested in more clinics for 2015.

New business;
Membership is down to 27 families. It was discussed that part of the problem could be that the launch facilities can be congested with motor boats making it difficult for sailors. We should cater to our members needs. We could lengthen our launch pad to get into deeper water. Some ideas presented for doing this including adding another concrete pad out from the existing pad.
It was suggested that we run the Seaspray Nationals on the same weekend as the Prairie Winds regatta.
There was no promotions done this past season to bring in new members or to have more rentals.
Some members have had some difficulties accessing their equipment if it has been stored in the garage.
